What Assets can Transfer to Silo Markets?

What Assets can Transfer to Silo Markets?

September 21, 2026

When you transfer an existing investment portfolio to Silo Markets through ACATS, eligible investments can generally be moved from your current brokerage without selling them first. However, not every type of asset is supported for transfer.

Different investments have different transfer requirements. Some securities may transfer normally, while others may be rejected, excluded from the transfer, or require separate handling.

1. What Is an ACATS Transfer?

ACATS, or the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service, is a system used to transfer eligible brokerage assets from one participating brokerage to another.

When eligible positions are transferred through ACATS, they can generally move from your existing brokerage account to your Silo account without being sold first.

This can allow you to move your portfolio while keeping eligible investments invested during the transfer.

Step 1: Select, “Transfers”

Step 2: Select, “Transfer Positions”

Step 3: Select, either “Full ACAT Transfer” or “Partial ACAT Transfer”

Step 3: Enter Verification Code and Complete Transfer

2. Which Assets Are Generally Supported?

Silo can accept certain commonly traded securities that are eligible for transfer through ACATS.

Depending on the account and security, this may include:

  • Stocks
  • ETFs
  • Bonds
  • Mutual Funds

Eligibility can depend on the specific security, account type, and whether the investment can be held in the receiving Silo account.

3. What Can I Not Transfer?

While many common investments can be moved seamlessly, certain types of assets are not eligible or supported for ACATS transfers to Silo.

The following assets are generally not supported for transfer:

  • Cryptocurrency
  • Many options contracts
  • Certain specific types of bonds

Additionally, fractional shares and certain complex or leveraged products are commonly excluded from ACATS transfers and may require separate handling or liquidation by your delivering brokerage.

4. Can I Transfer Cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency generally does not transfer through a standard ACATS securities transfer in the same way as stocks, ETFs, or bonds.

If you hold crypto at your current brokerage, check whether the specific asset and transfer method are supported before submitting an ACATS request.

Unsupported crypto holdings will generally need to remain with the existing provider or be handled separately according to that provider's procedures.

5. Can Fractional Shares Be Transferred?

Fractional shares may not be eligible for ACATS transfer.

For example, if you own 10.5 shares of a stock, the whole-share portion and fractional portion may be handled differently depending on the delivering brokerage and transfer process.

Unsupported fractional shares may remain behind or be liquidated by the delivering brokerage, with the resulting cash handled separately.

Review your transfer confirmation carefully to see whether any fractional positions were excluded.

6. Can I Transfer Leveraged Products?

Certain leveraged or complex investment products may not be supported by Silo.

This can include products that have additional trading, margin, or account requirements.

If a leveraged product cannot be held in your Silo account, it may be rejected during the transfer process rather than transferred as a normal position.

7. Why Would an Asset Be Rejected?

An asset may be rejected if:

  • Silo does not support the security.
  • The security cannot be held in the receiving account.
  • The account type is not eligible to hold the investment.
  • The security has special transfer requirements.
  • The position is fractional and cannot be transferred.
  • The investment is a product that Silo does not currently support.
  • The delivering brokerage cannot transfer the position through ACATS.

A rejected position does not necessarily mean there is an issue with your account. It may simply mean that the specific investment is not eligible for transfer.

8. What Happens to Unsupported Assets?

If your portfolio contains unsupported holdings, those investments may not arrive in your Silo account.

Depending on the security and the delivering brokerage's procedures, an unsupported position may: stay in the contra broker account or the whole transfer will be rejected.

The exact treatment depends on the investment and the policies of the brokerage delivering the assets.

9. Will I Know If Something Doesn't Transfer?

You should review the transfer status and final positions after your ACATS transfer is completed.

Compare your original portfolio with the assets that appear in your Silo account. Pay particular attention to:

  • Missing positions.
  • Fractional shares.
  • Mutual funds.
  • Options.
  • Complex or leveraged investments.
  • Cash balances.

If something you expected to transfer does not appear, contact Silo Support and your previous brokerage to determine what happened to the position.

10. Should I Sell Unsupported Investments Before Transferring?

It is not recommended to sell assets solely to facilitate a transfer without first verifying how the specific investment will be handled, as this decision is at your own discretion.

Please be aware that selling an investment before transferring it may trigger taxable events in taxable accounts. Before liquidating any unsupported positions to simplify a transfer, consider the potential tax implications and, if necessary, consult with a qualified tax professional to understand how this might impact your individual financial situation.
